Continuing Education Participant Comments
We provided a 1 1/2 day course on just the lower quarter portion of our Upper and Lower quarter course to the folks at the Jackson Clinic for their residency program and here is what they had to say:
“Thank you guys (Tab Blackburn & John Guido) for making the trek up here to teach the course this weekend. The course was great and we are getting some really good feedback from everyone that attended! I learned a ton from you guys and I enjoyed getting a chance to know you each a bit. I am definitely going to try and take the SFMA course sometime soon, and hopefully our paths with cross again in the not-so-distant-future.
We recently were asked to bring our SFMA course to the entire staff of West Texas Rehabilitation Center in Texas. Hosting one of our courses for your staff is a great way to get the entire staff on the same page and system of assessment and treatment which will obviously help with continuity of care. Here is what the folks at West Texas Rehabilitation Center had to say:
“I am writing on behalf of the West Texas Rehabilitation Center adult therapy staff in Abilene and San Angelo, TX. We would like to express our gratitude to the North American Sports Medicine Institute for allowing us to host their Selective Functional Movement Assessment course in our Abilene facility last weekend. It was truly a beneficial, yet at the same time, very enjoyable experience for all of our therapists, both PT and OT. Mike Voight and Brandon Gilliam did an excellent job teaching this course…it was remarkable how they were able to make the entire weekend extremely fun, while also providing a magnitude of relevant and functional information that each of us can use to better our skills as various types of therapists and trainers. No matter who you are and what patient (or athletic) population you work with, you can utilize these tools and techniques and apply these skills to take your treatment approaches (and the patients’ improvements) to a whole new level! We are all much better therapists now that we have learned the basic screening and testing techniques, as well as being able to apply the new exercises that we learned in this course to make our treatment approaches more functionally geared toward each patient as an individual. These concepts are also causing each of us to look at our patients (and their dysfunctions) in a whole new way, forcing us to think more and to try new things. As just one example, I have a patient that I’ve seen off and on for the past 2 years. I would always assess the patient and treat what I found…and she would always get better. However, she would also always come back with the same issues eventually. Because of this course, I am now looking at her as a whole (rather than focusing just on the area of her symptoms), and it has caused me to stop and think that obviously some other issue is driving her symptoms. I did the screen and followed the breakouts, as we were instructed in this course, and now I have found three other areas of dysfunction that are probably leading to her continued symptoms. These are areas that I probably would not have thought to assess before taking this course. I am excited to see the results of my new treatment approaches with her! All of our therapists are looking forward to practicing more of these new found skills each day so that we can become more efficient in the SFMA format, allowing us to utilize it with more patients and athletes! We are all very excited about the new doors this knowledge will open for us, and are very thankful to have had the opportunity to learn from these gentlemen and from this institute!”

“I’d like to thank you for the course this past week end. Typically in a continuing education course I get a pearl or even 2 or 3 to take back to practice with me (well, ok maybe 3 or 4, with 1 or 2 actually making it into practice). The SFMA course was hands-down the best course I have ever taken since graduating PT school 12 years ago. I have always had a neuromuscular coordination emphasis in my practice philosophy, trying to educate patients (and sometimes colleagues) to understand that quality movement depends in part on strength. but substantially on control of that strength. SFMA has crystallized my thoughts, and given me a pathway to assess the origins of these altered patterns. Can’t thank you enough. Hoping my colleagues will attend in September.”

“I wanted to thank you (Scott Miller) for the upbeat and outgoing personality that you and Paul (Drumheller) portrayed. I had a great time at the course (Lower Quarter Running Course) and was interested to see what others are doing in different regions of the country. It is nice to see that there are others out there doing the same things and use the same philosophies that we currently use in our clinic. It is refreshing to hear and see this as sometimes you loose perspective and it is good to know that you are teaching and performing the right treatments.”

“Thank you for such an informative broad based UE/LE course. I thought you (John Guido) and JR (Jason Robinson) did an exceptional job: good lectures and AV, good work book, answered questions with knowledge and professionalism, and always available for further clarification during breaks.”

“I would like to thank you for the beautiful informative presentation. I admire the manner you presented your teaching, relaxed and very knowlegeable. Truly the information and the materials gained from that week end will add abundantly in my practice.”

“I can’t tell you how many uses I have found for the SFMA (Selective Functional Movement Assessment) for my neurologic patient population. There are very few examples of collaborative work being done to improve assessment tools and delivery of care by high level practitioners in the area of physical therapy. I commend all of you for pushing the limits of the establishment TOGETHER to make a difference for patients with a multitude of dysfunctions.”

“Speakers very enthusiastic & interactive ; willing to answer all types of questions. Not real confident I’ll be able to implement all we learned in 2 days! It’s a lot of info – but great!!
