Although we would be lying if we said that we didn’t have fun traveling the country teaching physical therapy continuing education courses, that is definitely not the reason why the NASMI faculty do what we do. We have been truly blessed to meet so many great therapists all over the country with our various courses and look forward to many, many more to come. At the root of each NASMI/ACE course is passion for what we do and what we teach. Since kicking off the 2012 schedule the Selective Functional Movement Assessment course as well as the Current Concepts in the Management of Upper & Lower Quarter Injuries course have been off to a fantastic start.

The feedback and praise received from our PT continuing education courses is always humbling, as well as inspiring for us to continue to work hard to bring medical professionals the information and tools needed to take their practice to the next level. Below are several excerpts from various course participants as well as a great testimonial from Abilene, TX where the SFMA was hosted by the West Texas Rehabilitation Center. Co-sponsoring a course is one of the best ways to bring continuity of care to your patients by involving the entire staff in a fun and informative environment.

We are proud of our faculty and courses alike, but even more so we are passionate about spreading what we feel is critical knowledge to our colleagues across the country. We are looking forward to all of the adventures to come and hope to see you along the way. Find a course near you or contact us in regards to co-sponsoring a course for your facility!

“I had the pleasure of taking SFMA from you in Portland last week. Wow. I LOVED this class and can tell your heart was really into creating the system. I’ve enjoyed using it this week!!”

-Portland, OR SFMA participant

“I’d like to thank you for the course this past weekend. Typically in a con-ed course I get a pearl, or even 2 or 3 to take back to practice with me (well, okay, maybe 3 or 4, with 1 or 2 actually making it into practice). The SFMA course was hands-down the best course I have ever taken since graduating PT school 12 years ago. I have always had a neuromuscular coordination emphasis in my practice philosophy, trying to educate patients (and sometimes colleagues) to understand that quality movement depends in part on strength, but substantially on control of that strength. SFMA has crystallized my thoughts, and given me a pathway to assess the origins of these altered patterns. Can’t thank you enough. Hoping my colleagues will attend in Sept.”

“I would like to thank you for the beautiful informative presentation. I admire the manner you presented your teaching, relaxed and very knowledgeable. Truly the information and the materials gained from that weekend will add abundantly in my practice.”

“I am writing on behalf of the West Texas Rehabilitation Center adult therapy staff in Abilene and San Angelo, TX. We would like to express our gratitude to the North American Sports Medicine Institute for allowing us to host their Selective Functional Movement Assessment course in our Abilene facility last weekend. It was truly a beneficial, yet at the same time, very enjoyable experience for all of our therapists, both PT and OT. Mike Voight and Brandon Gilliam did an excellent job teaching this course…it was remarkable how they were able to make the entire weekend extremely fun, while also providing a magnitude of relevant and functional information that each of us can use to better our skills as various types of therapists and trainers. No matter who you are and what patient (or athletic) population you work with, you can utilize these tools and techniques and apply these skills to take your treatment approaches (and the patients’ improvements) to a whole new level! We are all much better therapists now that we have learned the basic screening and testing techniques, as well as being able to apply the new exercises that we learned in this course to make our treatment approaches more functionally geared toward each patient as an individual. These concepts are also causing each of us to look at our patients (and their dysfunctions) in a whole new way, forcing us to think more and to try new things. As just one example, I have a patient that I’ve seen off and on for the past 2 years. I would always assess the patient and treat what I found…and she would always get better. However, she would also always come back with the same issues eventually. Because of this course, I am now looking at her as a whole (rather than focusing just on the area of her symptoms), and it has caused me to stop and think that obviously some other issue is driving her symptoms. I did the screen and followed the breakouts, as we were instructed in this course, and now I have found three other areas of dysfunction that are probably leading to her continued symptoms. These are areas that I probably would not have thought to assess before taking this course. I am excited to see the results of my new treatment approaches with her! All of our therapists are looking forward to practicing more of these new found skills each day so that we can become more efficient in the SFMA format, allowing us to utilize it with more patients and athletes! We are all very excited about the new doors this knowledge will open for us, and are very thankful to have had the opportunity to learn from these gentlemen and from this institute!”

BG Gets Down in TEXAS

As the holidays are upon us and we near the end of 2011 now is a better time than ever to highlight some of our fantastic PT Con Ed courses…maybe some of you would like to add a NASMI/ACE course to your holiday wish list! This past weekend four of our wonderful instructors ventured to San Diego and Coeur d’Alene and had some fantastic feedback from course participants.

“Excellent course, very clear & concise. Thank You!”

“One of the best courses I have been to in a long time!”

“Speakers were enthusiastic & interactive; willing to answer all types of questions. Not real confident that I’ll be able to implement all we learned in 2 days! It’s a lot of info – but great!!”

It’s been a great year with the addition of this PT Con Ed course and we look forward to even more success in 2012 starting in Seattle. Be sure to check out the course schedule for more PT Continuing Education dates!

In a slightly different climate Mike and Brandon hit it off with a great group in Coeur d’Alene with the SFMA course, they too had wonderful feedback from this PT Con Ed course that is worth sharing…

“This information to so practical and easy to use-I wish that I had this back when I was in PT school.”

“The information presented is very unique – but understandable. I can’t wait to use this in the clinic monday morning. I know its going to change lives.”

Happy Holidays from the NASMI family!

This past weekend was packed full of NASMI excitement. From Dallas, to OKC, to Denver…3 great courses with even better participants and some fun surprises along the way!

Guido and JR were in Oklahoma City with the Upper and Lower quarter course and on the winning end of the Red River Rivalry. Mike and BG held it down with the SFMA in Dallas where participants were not as happy with the outcome of the big football game!

The boys had the privilege of meeting and spending time with one of the world’s top golf pros Jim McLean at his Texas Golf Center and really appreciated everyone’s hospitality throughout the trip.

Robyn and Paul wrapped up the weekend Saturday and Sunday with the Running course in Denver and had some great feedback on the course evaluations…here’s what people are saying:

“Great course! Good info backed by research.”

”Great pace of energy from both of you. Really liked the labs and the large amount of ex’s and treatment ideas.”

“I was never bored – we were kept engaged for 2 days, which is a difficult feat!! I enjoyed the course thoroughly.”

There is still one more running course in 2011-San Diego Nov 19-20! Sign up now and keep checking back for the spring schedule.

Some people just get all the tough assignments…Mike and BG have ventured all the way to Hawaii for a co-sponsored SFMA course while the rest of us are off for the weekend.

Keep checking back for the latest news and updates.

So far the Fall schedule is off to a great start with all of the NASMI PT Con Ed courses! This weekend we had two great groups in Atlanta, GA and Charlotte, NC.

Paul and Scott kicked off the weekend on Friday with newest addition to the PT seminar schedule with  “Lower Quarter Management of Overuse and Traumatic Injuries Related to the Running Athlete” in Atlanta. Although Scott had a run in with food poisoning it sounds like the guys did a great job and had an excellent group of participants with a genuine interest in the management of their injured running athletes. One course participant has already been in contact with Scott following up on course material and it’s always nice to hear feedback like this…

“I also wanted to thank you for the upbeat and outgoing personality that you and Paul portrayed.  I had a great time at the course and was interested to see what others are doing in different regions of the country.  It is nice to see that there are others out there doing the same things and use the same philosophies that we currently use at our clinic.  It is refreshing to hear and see this as sometimes you lose perspective and it is good to know that you are teaching and performing the right treatments.” -Running Course Participant

Good work guys! Rumor has it a guest appearance was made by NASMI’s Tab Blackburn and that there were some good photo ops! :)

We are looking forward to the next 2 PT con ed running courses this Fall in Denver (October 8-9) as well as San Diego (November 19-20). Keep up the great work.

Also on tap Saturday and Sunday was the PT con ed course  Selective Functional Movement Assessment in Charlotte with Mike and Robyn. As always, there was a great turn out of clinicians eager to learn the SFMA. From the sounds of it people really grasped the concepts and easily saw the clinical importance and application. Below are just a few comments from the course evals…

“This was a very interesting course. The presentations were very logical and made sense! I know I can use it tomorrow in the clinic.”

“This is such an amazing course!! The instructors were VERY helpful and as a bonus had a great sense of humor.”

“This was an excellent course! I really appreciated the exercise suggestions given for each discovered impairment. The instructors did a great job of making this a fun practical course.”

“This was a lot of information in 2 days-But very applicable, efficient approach to the diagnosis of movement dysfunction. I will apply these concepts immediately.”

Great job to Mike and Robyn! Next up for SFMA, Brandon and Mike in Dallas (October 7-8).

This weekend Tab Blackburn will be taking his talents to Fayetteville, AK for the always wonderful PT con ed course Upper and Lower Quarter Course. Be sure to check out all of our fall PT con ed courses available HERE.

Time and time again we were being asked by SFMA course participants where they could purchase the FMT tubing used for many of the corrective exercises learned that weekend…some even requesting to buy them right out of our equipment bag! After repeatedly sending people on a wild internet chase for the product and realizing that these were being sold for upwards of $50 a piece on some sites, we decided on a solution.

Enter the ACE/NASMI Online Store!

Here you can find not only 6 different resistance levels of the FMT tubing but also an array of other rehabilitation products at likely the lowest price out there. Be sure to check back often as we plan to continue to add products to the site, suggestions welcome!

It is with great pleasure and excitement to honor three NASMI faculty members who have received extremely high honors during the first half of 2011.
